- Fresh batteries for your thermostat and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms.
- A flashlight for looking inside dark furnace cabinets.
- A soft brush or vacuum with a hose attachment to remove dust.
- Mild detergent and towels for cleaning.
- A small bucket to catch water from the condensate drain line.
- A basic thermometer to check air temperatures later.
That's it. No special HVAC tools required.
Safety First: Clear the Area, Test Alarms, Know Your Shutoffs
Before you touch anything, make the space around the furnace safe.
Clear out any boxes, paint cans, or old holiday decorations stored near the unit. Furnaces need room to breathe and you need room to work.
Locate the electrical switch or breaker for the furnace. Know where the gas shutoff valve is. You don't want to be searching for these in the dark when something goes wrong.

Replace the batteries if it has them. Set the system switch to Heat. Raise the temperature setting about 3–5°F above the current room temperature. Make sure the fan is set to Auto, not On. Auto lets the fan run only when the furnace is heating, which saves energy.

Most furnace problems come down to airflow. And airflow is cheap to fix.
Install a fresh filter with the arrow pointing toward the furnace. If you have a 1-inch filter, plan to replace it every 1–3 months during heating season. Indiana's fall harvest dust and allergens can load a filter fast. If you have a thicker media filter, check it every 6 months. A dirty filter makes your furnace work harder, raises your energy bill, and can cause the furnace to overheat and shut down.
Walk through every room and open all the supply registers. In older Indianapolis homes with basement and attic duct runs, it's common to find registers closed in unused rooms. Indoor Unit Check: Dust, Wires, and Condensate Drains
Turn off power to the furnace at the switch or breaker. Then remove the front blower door. Most furnaces have a simple latch or screws. Look inside with your flashlight.
You're checking for:
- Excessive dust buildup on the blower motor and wheel.
- Loose or chewed wires (mice love furnace cabinets).
- Water stains or rust, especially around the base.
If you see light dust, you can gently vacuum it with a brush attachment. Don't go poking around the control board or gas valve. If you see water stains, that's a clue the condensate drain may be clogged.
High-efficiency furnaces (90%+) produce condensation. There's a small trap and drain line that carries that water away. In Indiana basements, this line can get gunked up with algae or mineral buildup. A condensate drain check is part of any good furnace startup checklist. If the trap is dry, pour a cup of water into it to prime it. The trap needs water to prevent sewer gas or flue gas from backing up. Check the drain line for clogs — you can use a wet-dry vac on the end outside or blow gently through it. If you have a condensate pump, pour water into the reservoir to make sure it kicks on and pumps the water out.
While the door is off, look at the flame sensor. It's a thin metal rod that sits in the burner flame. Over time, it gets coated with a white residue and can cause the furnace to ignite and then shut off after a few seconds. You can try a flame sensor cleaning yourself: turn off power, remove the sensor (usually one screw), and gently rub it with fine steel wool or a Scotch-Brite pad. But if you're not comfortable, leave it to a pro. It's a five-minute fix for a technician, but you don't want to break a wire or strip the screw.
Reinstall the blower door carefully. The safety switch must engage or the furnace won't run.
Don't Forget the Venting: PVC Intake and Exhaust Inspection
Your furnace needs to exhaust combustion gases and pull in fresh air. If you have a high-efficiency furnace, you'll see two white PVC pipes coming out the side of your house. One is intake, one is exhaust. They should be clear of leaves, lint, mulch, or animal nests. In the fall, leaves can pile up quickly. A blocked intake or exhaust can cause the furnace to shut down or even pull exhaust gases back into the house.
Check the terminations outside. They should sit at least 12 inches above the ground to avoid snow blockage in winter — we get plenty of snow in the Indianapolis area. Clear away any debris. If you have an older natural-draft furnace (80% efficient), you'll have a metal flue that goes up a chimney. Make sure the chimney cap is intact and the flue isn't blocked by a bird nest.
Inside, check the furnace venting inspection: any gaps or disconnections in the flue pipe? Rust holes? If the pipe has shifted or come loose, that's a serious safety issue. Call a pro.
Humidifier Startup Settings
If your home has a whole-house humidifier, now's the time to get it ready.
Hard water in central Indiana scales up the water panel fast. Replace the old panel with a new one. Set the damper (usually on the side of the humidifier) to the Winter position. Then set the humidistat to around 30–40% to start. As outdoor temperatures drop, you may need to lower that to prevent condensation on windows.
