Think gas smell, burning odor, sparking, water pouring out of the indoor unit, or a system that keeps tripping the breaker. Those are “shut it off and call now” situations. Same goes if you have no heat in freezing temperatures and you’ve got young kids, elderly family members, or pipes that might freeze. In a heat wave like we get in July and August, no air conditioning when the indoor temp climbs above 85 can also become an emergency for anyone with health issues.
But not every “no cool” is a same-night problem. If it’s 75 degrees outside and you can open windows, a broken AC can wait until morning. A furnace that won’t start in early October? You can probably bundle up and schedule a regular appointment. The key is to look for danger signs first.
