First Things First: Turn Off the AC

Once it's safe, check the drain pan. If it's full and water is near wiring or the furnace board, don't mop blindly. Water and electricity aren't friends. DIY Fix: Vinegar and a Wet Vac (No Bleach, Please)

  1. Pour in white distilled vinegar. Remove the cap and pour 1–2 cups down the cleanout. Let it sit 30 minutes. Vinegar works like a mild acid that dissolves algae without hurting your coil or PVC. Bleach can corrode metal pans and create fumes that blow through your ductwork—hard pass.
  2. Flush with warm water. After the vinegar soak, pour a quart or two of warm (not boiling) water down the line. Watch for it to drain smoothly. If it backs up, stop—you might have a solid plug.
  3. Wet/dry vac to the rescue. Find where the drain exits your house—usually a small pipe sticking out near the foundation. Attach a wet/dry vac hose to the opening, seal around it with a rag or your hand, and run the vac for 60-90 seconds. You'll likely hear a thlurk and see a dark, slimy blob gush into the canister. That's your algae clog. Flush again with water to clear the line.
  4. If you have a condensate pump. Check that little beige pump near the furnace. Is it buzzing but not emptying? It might be stuck. Unplug for a minute, then plug back in. Sometimes a tiny piece of crud jams the check valve—you can unscrew the output line and clean it. If the pump's motor is dead, you'll need a new one.

When to Skip DIY and Call a Pro

Sometimes that simple fix doesn't stick. If the drain clogs again in a few days, or you can't find a cleanout tee, or the pan under the coil is rusty and flaking—it's time to call us.
